The Power of The Reset

I’m recovering from a 1.5 week illness where most aspects of my life were put on hold. Emerging from this unplanned hibernation, I have a fresh appreciation for one of my favorite mindset tools: the reset.

The reset replaces many nasty-self-talk greatest hits, such as: “I failed”, “I should’ve done better”, “I’ll never catch up”, “what’s wrong with me?”, “I never meet my goals”, “I’m so behind”, “why bother?” and more. In place of any of those, confidently state: “I’m taking a reset.” The reset can be used in a variety of contexts: after an illness, regrouping post-vacation, seasonal shifts like Summertime, calendar milestones like a birthday or New Year’s, and - probably the most profound of all - just because you decide to take a reset.

Taking a reset can be a powerful way to bring fresh-start energy and valuable perspective to your day-to-day life. It’s a chance to pause, look around, and wonder how things are going. It’s noticing something that’s feeling out-of-whack and getting curious about what it needs. It’s compassionately giving that thing time and attention. Sometimes, it means redesigning the thing or letting go of it altogether.

A few examples of things that can benefit from a reset:

  • The laundry pile

  • Exercise habits

  • A friendship

  • Your calendar

  • A goal

  • A space in your home

  • Self care routines

Reset energy takes a curious look at your life - habits, goals, physical environment, relationships, routines, schedules, expectations - and asks questions. What’s going well? What do I want to let go of? What did I miss while I was away on vacation? What did I notice about my physical space while I was sick on the couch? What do I want to let go of? Do I have any goals that feel off-kilter? Do I feel like I’m failing at something? Scan your responses and choose one: now give it a reset.

Whether you’re coming out of a virus-induced break, or you’re just craving a fresh start, the reset is a powerful tool. I’ve got more ideas about how to give something a reset, which I’ll be sharing in future posts. In the meantime, get curious:
